Cortec Examines Additives to Protect Yellow Metals

Yellow metals such as bronze, copper, and brass are often overlooked in the quest for corrosion protection because they do not corrode as easily as less noble metals such as steel and zinc. However, that does not mean they are irrelevant or immune to corrosion. Cortec reminds formulators why selecting corrosion inhibiting additives such as M-235 and M-236 for yellow metals can be an important piece to solving the corrosion puzzle.

Corrosion and Its Challenges for the Mechanical World

Sometimes corrosion is attractive. For example, the vivid colors on titanium jewelry are oxides, with the color difference the result of the oxide thickness and the refracted light. Also, from an artistically oriented viewpoint, the golden-brown appearance of many of the new high-voltage towers made from ASTM A 242 (Corten) steel is more appealing than their bright galvanized cousins, and that “pleasing brown color” is a tightly bonded coating of rust. But most of the time, and in several ways, corrosion presents difficulties that can greatly shorten the life of mechanical equipment.

The Flexibility Factor

A flagship coupling in the Huco range, the Oldham solves the problem of side forces due to misalignment. Misalignment couplings that bend or flex do cause some side loading on bearings and shafts as the coupling tries to spring back. Of course, over prolonged use this can result in rapid deterioration of bearings, extra load on the motor, and eventual coupling fatigue.

Gear Wear Calculation and Prediction

Wear is a very important topic for dry running plastic gears. Over the past few years, the authors have worked closely with a number of manufacturers of plastic gears to investigate the problems of gear wear in detail. Together they have developed a calculation method that can be used to predict where and when local wear will occur on a tooth flank. Their findings have also just been published in the final version of VDI 2736.

Premature Bearing Failures in Wind Gearboxes and White Etching Cracks

Wind turbine gearboxes are subjected to a wide variety of operating conditions, some of which may push the bearings beyond their limits. Damage may be done to the bearings, resulting in a specific premature failure mode known as white etching cracks (WEC), sometimes called brittle, short-life, early, abnormal or white structured flaking (WSF). Measures to make the bearings more robust in these operating conditions are discussed in this article.
