Vesconite Rudder Bearings Selected for New Zealand-Built Sportfishing Superyacht

Vesconite Bearings supplied bearings and washers in July 2026 for a custom-built 60 m sportfishing yacht under construction at one of New Zealand's leading custom yacht builders. Two upper rudder bearings and two lower rudder bearings were supplied, with the lower rudder bearings being longer since they carry a much higher reaction load and need a larger bearing area to keep the bearing pressure within acceptable limits.

The bearing manufacturer also supplied various washers, including the seal retainer, a thrust washer and the spacer/tiller, which can be identified as having a keyway cutout. The seal retainer holds the sealing arrangement in position around the rudder stock. The thrust washer provides a bearing surface for vertical loads. The spacer/tiller, meanwhile, positions the tiller or steering component at the correct height on the rudder stock.

The bearings and washers will be installed in what is expected to be one of the largest sportfishing yachts built by the well-known Auckland-based shipyard. The vessel is scheduled for completion in mid-2027 for delivery to its owner in the Middle East.

Sportfishing yachts, often referred to as sportfish or convertibles, are purpose-built for offshore game fishing while offering the luxury, comfort and amenities expected of a high-end cruising yacht. They combine powerful performance with sophisticated accommodation, making them popular among owners seeking both recreational fishing capability and luxury cruising.

At approximately 60 m in length, the yacht is a significantly larger platform than conventional sportfishing vessels, showing how the sector continues to evolve toward increasingly sophisticated, larger custom superyachts.

For vessels operating extensively in demanding marine environments, bearing reliability is critical. Rudder bearings are continuously exposed to seawater, high steering loads and long operating periods, making corrosion resistance and low maintenance important design considerations.

Engineered bearings and washers from Vesconite Bearings offer several advantages for these applications, with low-friction characteristics and a design for minimal maintenance. Their dimensional stability in wet conditions also makes them well suited to demanding steering systems.

The Middle East has become an important market for luxury sportfishing yachts as investment in marinas and marine infrastructure has expanded across the region. Owners are increasingly commissioning large custom vessels that combine offshore fishing with extended cruising and luxury entertainment.

The latest project strengthens Vesconite Bearings' position in the international custom and superyacht markets, where engineered bearing materials are increasingly specified for demanding marine applications requiring reliable performance in saltwater environments.
