NEMA Publishes New Guide for Permanent Magnet Motors

Today, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published a new standard NEMA SM 1-2017 Guide to General-Purpose Synchronous Motors without Excited Rotor Windings. This guide covers general-purpose synchronous motors without excited rotor windings, and provides design metrics for polyphase alternating-current permanent magnet motors rated 500 horsepower and less.

“This new set of operation and construction guidelines for permanent magnet motors gives us a much needed set of metrics for designing these types of motors, and gives the marketplace confidence that compliant motors will perform reliably for their particular application,” said Tim Schumann, service manager of SEW-Eurodrive and chair of the NEMA Motor and Generator Technical Committee. NEMA SM 1-2017 is available in hard copy and as an electronic download for $285 on the NEMA website.
