Igus Develops Lightweight E-Chain for Simple Gliding Applications with Long Travels
Igus has introduced a new e-chain system, “glide-chain,” designed specifically for gliding applications with extended travel distances. The innovative glide-chain G4.42, presented at Hannover Messe, is optimized for indoor cranes and similar applications with travel lengths up to approximately 98 feet (30 meters). The product’s streamlined design offers substantial cost reductions of 30 to 40 percent.
High-performance plastic cable carriers guide cables safely and reliably in various industrial applications worldwide, notably indoor cranes in manufacturing environments. Recognizing the growing demand for simplified, cost-effective solutions, Igus developed the glide-chain G4.42, which is tailored specifically for straightforward gliding movements. Due to its large sliding surfaces and specialized material placement optimized exclusively for sliding performance, the glide-chain G4.42 achieves up to 25 percent weight reduction compared to standard Igus chains.
A significant design advancement of the glide-chain G4.42 involves cost-effective side links applicable universally on both the left and right sides. Coupled with an increased pitch, this innovation significantly decreases the components required. Consequently, the glide-chain provides considerable economic advantages, achieving 30 to 40 percent lower cost compared to comparable standard Igus e-chains within the E2 and E4 product families.
“At a time when customers face immense pressure to minimize costs, we have developed a solution that not only significantly reduces expenditure but also ensures durable and reliable performance in the field,” stated Rob Mammone, product manager e-chain Systems at Igus.
Prior to market introduction, the glide-chain G4.42 underwent rigorous testing procedures in Igus’s proprietary 4,000 m2 (4,100 ft2) testing facility. Furthermore, Igus confidently supports all its energy chain products with a four-year guarantee.
Recycling Initiative for Sustainability
In line with its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, Igus operates the “chainge” recycling program to promote the circular economy by recycling energy chains at the end of their useful lives. This initiative accepts plastic energy chains from all manufacturers. Participants in the program receive vouchers redeemable toward new Igus products.
