ABB Motor Delivers High Efficiency in Severe-Duty Platform

Industrial operators preparing for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) 2027 motor efficiency requirements now have a simple, yet advanced, solution with ABB’s new SD200 SP4 severe-duty motor.

Designed for maximum compatibility with existing SD200 motors, the SD200 SP4 delivers NEMA Premium 4 efficiency while simplifying upgrades, reducing energy consumption and minimizing supply chain complexity.

Beginning June 1, 2027, manufacturers will no longer be permitted to produce 100-250 horsepower motors that meet current NEMA Premium efficiency standards.

“ABB’s SD200 SP4 gives customers a proven, practical path to DOE compliance today before market pressure builds,” said Courtney Pickett, product specialist, ABB NEMA Motors. “Operators can transition to higher efficiency without redesigning applications, helping ensure compliance while keeping operations running.”

Built on ABB's SD200 severe-duty platform, the motor features heavy-duty cast iron frames, C-4140 high-strength steel shafts, Class H insulation systems and IP55 ingress protection for demanding environments, including mining, chemical processing, petroleum refining, pulp and paper, water and wastewater.

SD200 SP4 combines NEMA Design B performance with rugged severe-duty construction to increase energy performance without compromising reliability, ABB said. It reduces motor losses by an average of 20 percent, lowering electricity consumption in continuously running applications. SD200 SP4’s reduced heat generation also supports cooler operation, longer service intervals and dependable long-term operation.

ABB’s SD200 SP4 is fully frame-by-frame compatible with existing SD200 motors, so operators can replace motors without costly equipment redesigns. Drop-in compatibility streamlines specification, installation and maintenance, while an oversized conduit box wiring access and serviceability.

SD200 SP4 is available now in 125-250 horsepower two- and four-pole configurations through ABB's authorized distribution network. Six-pole configurations within the same horsepower range will be available later this year.
