ABB Meets Mexico’s Water Industry Demands with Vertical Hollow Shaft Motors

ABB expanded the availability of Vertical Hollow Shaft (VHS) motors to meet Mexico’s growing water industry needs by obtaining its NOM/ANCE certification. Designed for vertical pumping applications, ABB VHS motors are engineered for critical industries including agriculture, mining, municipal water, wastewater treatment and industrial processing.

With NOM (Normas Oficiales Mexicanas) and ANCE (Asociación de Normalización y Certificación) certification, ABB VHS motors comply with Mexico's regulatory requirements for safety and energy efficiency, enabling customers, equipment manufacturers and channel partners to confidently specify and deploy ABB solutions across the country.

“ABB’s practical, reliable Vertical Hollow Shaft motors aren't just engineered for performance, they're designed to help Mexico tackle its water crisis,” said Sam Harris, vice president of fluid dynamics and heavy industrial solutions, ABB. “With reduced energy consumption, extended service life and simplified maintenance, ABB’s motors enable customers to operate more sustainable, cost-effective pumping systems that support Mexico's long-term water security."

ABB VHS motors are purpose-built for vertical pumping systems, offering a combination of durability, serviceability and application-specific design advantages. This includes a top-mounted coupling design that allows for easier access to pump components, reducing downtime and service complexity. Integrated sight glass enables quick visual inspection of thrust bearing lubrication. It is also available in multiple enclosure types, including weather protected and totally enclosed designs for harsh environments. It is also built to standard NEMA dimensions for seamless replacement and retrofit

Key features include NEMA Premium (IE3) efficiency, extra high-thrust capacity (175% extra thrust on 440 frames and above), inverter-duty rating for variable speed drive compatibility, and a heavy-duty cast iron frame. Motors are available from 15-500 horsepower across multiple voltage and frame options.

NOM are mandatory technical regulations issued by Mexico's standardization agencies, establishing rules, specifications and guidelines applicable to products, processes and services to promote quality and economic development. Products complying with NOM standards may use the official NOM seal, regulated by Official Mexican Standard NOM-106-SCFI-2017.
