The model AMC10 from Ogura Industrial Corp. is an electromagnetic clutch that has been developed for an end of shaft connection. The clutch was developed as a high speed retrofit package for older printing machines, allowing the use of the higher speed components without modifying the bearing support for the original print roll shafts. The clutch incorporates a shaft supported by two ball bearings in the clutch coil housing. The field of a clutch has a backing plate that is bolted solidly to a machine. A timing belt pulley, supported by a double row ball bearing, is the input to the clutch. The output is the rotor and shaft. On the end of the shaft is a coupling, which connects to the machine’s shaft end.
Since the shaft is supported by the bearings and the clutch housing, any side load from the timing belt is carried by the clutch bearings and not transferred into the machine's shaft. This mini “jack shaft” clutch eliminates side loading and eliminates the chance for any shaft deflection. Existing models are available in both 10 and 20 in.-lbs versions and can accommodate speeds up to 3,600 rpm.
