MINExpo Recap: ContiTech

October 6, 2016

Continental featured four “tried-and-true” industrial hose lines for the mining industry at MINExpo 2016. The four mining hose lines are Mine Spray, Flextra Rock Dust, Brigade Mine and Spiraflex Dust.

“These are hose lines that have withstood a variety of elements and conditions that are part of everyday business in the mining industry,” said Randy Kish, manager of distributor marketing for industrial hose and hydraulics.  “These are some of our most popular mining hose lines.”

The hoses are specifically designed for mining industry applications. Mine Spray is a general underground hose used to control dust. It is also used on continuous mining machinery at the headface and on other mechanical machines.  Brigade Mine is a flame-resistant hose used in underground mines for fire protection. Flextra Rock Dust is, as the name indicates, used for handling rock dust in underground mines. Spiraflex Rock Dust is a lightweight and flexible alternative to rubber hose primarily for underground coal mining.

Continental also introduced three new series of Constant Pressure Spiral hoses to expand their hydraulic product offering in the high-pressure hose range.

The Constant Pressure Spiral hoses are XCP4S, XCP5S and the XCP6S. “These are for use primarily in very high pressure hydraulic applications that require extra abrasion resistance,” said Kish. “These hoses have excellent impulse performance and flexibility which are ideal for mining equipment and feature the Extended Life extra abrasion resistant cover to meet the robust demands of the industry.”

The hoses have a polychloroprene inner tube and are reinforced with four or six alternating layers of spiraled high-tensile steel wire.  The synthetic rubber cover provides Extended Life, extra abrasion-resistance and is oil and weather resistant.  It is operable between -40 degrees (F) to 250 degrees (F).

Three new power transmission belts for the mining industry were also available at the show. The belts are the Hy-T Wedge, SilentSync and Conti Synchrochain Carbon. “These are three different drive options for a single theoretical drive,” said Brent Holstine, product specialist, power transmission products.  “Each drive has progressively higher power ratings, demonstrating how much more power can be driven by smaller belts due to improvements in technology and engineering.”

The Hy-T Wedge has a new EPDM compound offering a broader operating temperature range and improved heat resistance.  It also has new optimized tooth profile that improves flexibility and reduces belt fatigue to improve life.
SilentSync has an exclusive tooth profile that reduces noise up to 19 db. compared with other straight tooth synchronous products. The sprockets use a flangeless design that is self-tracking and saves space, and continuous rolling engagement of the belt and sprocket reduce vibration.

Conti Synchrochain Carbon is the strongest synchronous belt Continental offers, and uses ultra high strength polyurethane and carbon cord to deliver more power in a smaller package.
