Pepperl+Fuchs Introduces Inductive Coupling Devices

November 11, 2013
Pepperl+Fuchs introduces flat-pack style transmitter coupling devices to their WIS (short range wireless inductive coupling system) product family. These new flat pack devices allow power and signal coupling to be transferred across an air gap of up to 20 mm. These wireless devices allow sensors to be connected to moveable platforms without the worry about twisting and rotating cables. Applications include rotating tables, moving pallets, modular tooling platforms and sliding fixtures.

“Short range wireless inductive couplings are an ideal solution when sensing devices are needed on machine elements that are moving or rotating,” explains David Rubinski, Inductive Sensor product manager, Pepperl+Fuchs. “A device that can transfer signal and power without cabling or a physical connection is highly desirable. Unlike mechanical-contact-based connection systems, inductively coupled power and signal systems allow a wireless transfer of these signals from a primary system side to a secondary, exchangeable or moveable secondary side. This allows sensors to be placed onto an exchangeable machine cartridge element and have the electrical signals passed across an air gap to the control system auxiliary or main control panel.”

The WIS transfers both power and signal without the use of batteries, by using two transmission elements that allow transfer when they come within the required proximity range.

The WIS system can interface to eight PNP sensors via a single interface block. Multiple secondary modules can be connected to a single primary, whether they’re being used for inductive, capacitive, ultrasonic or photoelectric sensing. They are conveniently side powered by 24 VDC.
