The small spring applied brake series from Ogura (models MCNB 2, 5 and 10) have been redesigned to feature an overall reduction in thickness of around 30 percent. Advances in friction material have allowed the brakes to maintain the same torque ratings while eliminating the need for higher force springs and a correspondently higher wattage coil.
The thinner spring applied holding brakes are appropriate for the servo motor and robotics industries where size and weight is always a concern. Since less steel is used in the coil shell and less copper in the windings, cost of the brakes are lower than the current MCNB series. On some models, the outside diameter has been slightly reduced, but all models have the same through whole mounting dimensions as the current MCNB brakes, meaning brake models are interchangeable.
