End users and OEMs frequently specify "lubed-for-life" mounted bearings, thinking the lubed-for-life bearings will deliver the same life â” without lubrication â” as bearings that currently require periodic lubrication. The truth is it depends on many factors, and only a detailed review of the application and testing will provide a more accurate answer.
When trying to find a new bonding material dispense system, one manufacturer tested a series of pumps â” all of which leaked due to the abrasiveness of the bonding material. The manufacturer also had been attempting to manage shot size manually with their previous system, and was not able to keep dispense consistent. The company searched for a system that could accurately dispense programmed shot sizes while also eliminating the leaking issues they had experienced with previous pumps. Graco provided a Check-Mate pump with SmartWare software, and the manufacturer is now able to automatically dispense shots of bonding material as small as one ounce without leaks.

Power density is a key factor in gear design. Increasing the power density enables engineers to use smaller gears for their applications which lead to smaller and lighter gear boxes. The benefit for example for the automotive industry is less moving load in the vehicles and therefor a reduction of fuel consumption and subsequently a reduction of CO2 emission. The limiting factor for the increase in power density of gears is the material strength in regard to the critical failure mode.
If you are involved in the acquisition of technology (whether your direct role is machine design, maintenance, purchasing or management), trade shows still provide one of the best ways to evaluate options, learn about the latest technology and find solutions to problems.
Navigating Clutch/Brake Operation in Harsh Environmental Conditions: Chemicals, saltwater, food particles, heat, dust, and electrical corrosion are just a few of the many issues that can cause clutches and brakes to fail prematurely.
Heavy industry. The phrase conjures images of mines and steel mills, of huge caverns underground, of cavern-like factories, of oldline companies operating heavy-duty machines for hightorque work. That's the image of heavy industry. Today, though, there's also another image. It's of an operator walking a steel mill's floor, looking at his smartphone or his tablet.
The American Gear Manufacturers Association has evolved its trade show. What was formerly Gear Expo is now the Motion + Power Technology Expo (MPT Expo), an event intended to represent the entire motion and power transmission supply chain. As part of the expansion of the showâ™s scope, AGMA has partnered with the NFPA (National Fluid Power Association) to include a fluid power pavilion and additional educational sessions.

The world is full-on automated. From our factories to our vehicles to our leisurely activities, the future is now and itâ™s nothing but algorithms, robotics and hands-free operation. It comes as no surprise that a 2016 Google search brings a fair amount of technology gone awry. The following examples donâ™t scare us (theyâ™re actually quite fascinating) but they probably should worry us a little bitâ¦
You may have noticed that the magazine looks different this issue. The new look is part of an overall effort to refine our focus. We wanted to make clear to potential subscribers and advertisers how this magazine is different, why its content is important and where it fits in the marketplace.
Seal design engineers and end users are continually seeking improved sealing systems and materials. This paper describes the potential of a new thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material to deliver improvements in pressure, speed and temperature capability, which are presented as comparisons to proven industry standard materials. Performance is demonstrated by virtue of test bench results of seals made from MDI-, PPDI- and NDI-based materials.

Regardless of where you do business, when discussing, analyzing or worrying about âœThe Economyâ these days, youâ™re not thinking Main Street - youâ™re thinking global. With that stipulation, it is also accepted wisdom that quality products and sharp pencils are not enough to be and remain competitive. Accordingly, everyone is looking for an edge, an advantage, in order to beat back - or at least keep up with - the competition.

Wind is the talk of the town. It has become especially relevant to the power transmission community where bearings, gears, couplings, motors and gearboxes are providing the equipment for this thriving alternative energy industry. It comes as no surprise that the Windpower 2009 Conference and Exhibition, arriving in Chicago from May 4â“7, will be the largest gathering of wind energy professionals and technologies to date.
The development of a new, gas-carburized gear steel, necessitated by a customer-driven specification, has not only increased the power density in an existing gearbox design, but has done so without requiring any significant change to production processes or heat treatment equipment.
The first trade show dedicated specifically to small and community wind took place in Detroit, Michigan November 3â“5. Denise Bode, American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) CEO, was pleased with the turnout for the event and the increasing potential for this segment of the wind energy market.
In looking for potential opportunities to reduce energy consumption via the drive system, a number of areas should be considered.

Weâ™ve recently completed a major redesign of the powertransmission. com website. I know what youâ™re thinking. Big deal, right? Websites are redesigned every day. Itâ™s not really news. Youâ™re right, of course. Weâ™re in the news business, and when companies send us press releases about their newly redesigned websites, our first instinct as editors is to respond the same way. So what. Big deal. Moving on.
In recent years the estimation of gearbox power loss is attracting more interest â” especially in the wind turbine and automotive gearbox industry â” but also in industrial gearboxes where heat dissipation is a consideration as well. As new transmissions concepts are being researched to meet both ecological and commercial demands, a quick and reliable estimation of overall efficiency becomes inevitable in designing the optimal gearbox.
A thermo-mechanical model of a splash lubricated one-stage gear unit is presented. This system corresponds to a first step towards the design of a hybrid vehicle gearbox that can operate up to 40,000 rpm on its primary shaft. The numerical model is based on the thermal network method and takes into account power losses due to teeth friction, rolling-elements bearings and oil churning. Some calculations underline that oil churning causes a high amount of power loss. A simple method to reduce this source of power losses is presented, and its influence on the gear unit efficiency and its thermal capacity is computed.

After a sluggish 2013, annual installations of new wind turbines grew by 44% in 2014, according to the Global Wind Energy Council. And while much of that growth has been in Asiaâ” particularly China, which now leads the world with 114 GW of installed capacityâ”the USA, Europe, and the rest of the world expect steady growth for the next couple of years as well (Fig. 1).
Engineers are often challenged with the seemingly impossible task of doing more with less. Customers want more power transmitted in a smaller space, they want more efficient designs, and, of course, they want to spend less money. So engineers are always looking for ways to squeeze the most out of their mechanical systems. Theyâ™re constantly working to maximize power density, increase energy efficiency and reduce costs to meet their customersâ™ needs.
