The Basic Gear Noise Short Course is considered

extremely valuable for gear designers and noise specialists alike who encounter

gear noise and transmission design problems. Attendees will learn how to design

gears to minimize the major excitations of gear noise: transmission error, dynamic

friction forces and shuttling forces. Fundamentals of noise generation and measurement

will be covered, along with topics on gear rattle, transmission dynamics and

housing acoustics. This course includes extensive demonstrations of special

gear analysis software in addition to the demonstrations of many Ohio State gear

test rigs. A unique feature of the course is the interactive workshop session

that invites attendees to discuss their specific gear and transmission noise

concerns. Cost: $1,300.

Advanced Gear Noise Short Course, September 13-14, 2004

The Ohio State University, Department of Mechanical Engineering

This advanced session is directed towards individuals who have previously attended

the Basic Gear Noise Short Course. This advanced course will be taught through

lectures on selected topics coupled with a series of hands-on workshops. Based

upon the interest of attendees, the following topics may be included: (a). Computer

modeling: transmission error prediction, general system dynamics, bearing/casing

dynamics, gear rattle models; (b). Experimental approaches: modal analysis of

casings, acoustic radiation, advanced signal processing, sound quality analysis,

transmission error measurement.
